How to Crop PDF Margins for Kindle / E-Reader Reading

PDFs designed for letter/A4 paper waste 30-40% of e-reader screens with white margins. Cropping margins before sending to your Kindle or Kobo makes text twice as legible at any zoom level. Here's how to do it free in your browser.

The problem

Academic papers, technical PDFs, and out-of-copyright books on Project Gutenberg are all designed for printing. On a 6-inch Kindle screen, the actual text occupies a 4-inch strip surrounded by uselessly large margins. Pinch-zooming every page gets old fast. Cropped once, the same file becomes pleasant to read.

Use the tool now

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Open the Crop PDF tool

Drop your PDF into [Crop PDF](/en/tools/crop-pdf). Files stay local.

  2. 2

    Auto-detect content area

Click "Auto-Detect Content" — the tool finds the bounding box of actual text/images on each page and proposes a uniform crop. Works well on consistent layouts.

  3. 3

    Adjust manually if needed

For documents with running headers/footers (page numbers, titles), drag the crop handles to keep them or remove them. For asymmetric layouts (textbooks with side notes), the auto-detect may miss content — review page-by-page.

  4. 4

Apply to all pages or selectively

Most ebooks: apply uniform crop to all pages. Mixed-layout documents: crop chapter-by-chapter for best results.

  5. 5

Download and sideload to your Kindle

Email the cropped file to your Kindle's @kindle.com address, or drag it via USB. Calibre also imports cropped PDFs cleanly.

Pro tips

  • For Kindle Paperwhite (6 inch): crop to ~4×5.5 aspect ratio for comfortable reading.
  • For Kindle Scribe (10.2 inch) or larger Kobos: crop less aggressively — these screens handle larger margins fine.
  • Run [Compress PDF](/en/tools/compress-pdf) after cropping for a smaller file that transfers faster to your e-reader over Wi-Fi.
  • For OCR'd PDFs, the text layer adjusts to the new crop boundaries automatically — search still works.

Frequently asked questions

Will cropping cut off page numbers?

Auto-detect tries to preserve them. If aggressive cropping removes them, undo and adjust the crop box to include the bottom margin.

Does cropping reduce file size?

Slightly. Page dimensions shrink but the underlying content (text, images) stays the same. Compress PDF after cropping for further reduction.

Can I uncrop later?

PDF cropping changes the visible page-box but doesn't delete the original content. In Adobe Acrobat or with [Page Dimensions](/en/tools/page-dimensions), you can reset the crop to the original media-box.

Why does my Kindle still show margins?

Some Kindles auto-add 5% margins regardless of source. Try cropping more aggressively, or use Calibre's "Trim PDF" plugin which can override Kindle defaults.
