How to Rotate Pages in a PDF (Fix Sideways Phone Scans)

Phone scanners turn ID cards sideways. Office multifunction printers rotate pages randomly. Document scanners flip every other page. Here's how to fix orientation in any PDF — permanently, not just in your viewer.

The problem

Some PDF viewers let you rotate the view temporarily, but the rotation doesn't save with the file. When you email or upload it, the recipient sees the original sideways orientation. You need to rotate AND save the rotation as the file's actual orientation.

Use the tool now

Open the rotate pdf tool and follow the steps below.

Open Tool

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Open the Rotate PDF tool

Drop your PDF into [Rotate PDF](/en/tools/rotate-pdf). All processing is local.

  2. 2

    Select pages to rotate

Click thumbnails to select. Use Shift+click for ranges, Ctrl/Cmd+click to multi-select non-contiguous pages. Or use "All pages" for whole-document rotation.

  3. 3

    Choose rotation amount

90° clockwise, 180°, or 90° counterclockwise. For sideways phone scans, 90° clockwise is usually correct — but try once and undo if wrong.

  4. 4

    Apply and download

Click Rotate → Download. The new PDF has the rotation baked in — every viewer shows it correctly.

Pro tips

  • For mixed-orientation documents (some pages portrait, some landscape that scanned sideways), rotate only the affected pages — not the whole document.
  • If your scanner produces alternating-page rotations (front of every duplex page upside down), use Rotate every other page — selectable via the page-range syntax 1,3,5,7 etc.
  • For one-time fixes that don't need to ship to anyone else, your PDF viewer's temporary rotate (Ctrl+Shift+Plus in most viewers) is faster.
  • After rotating an OCR'd PDF, the OCR text layer might not match the new orientation — re-OCR after rotation if you need text search.

Frequently asked questions

Will rotating compress the file or change quality?

No. Rotation only changes the page metadata — pixel data is untouched. File size is identical to within bytes.

Can I rotate by an arbitrary angle (e.g., 5°)?

Use the Rotate Custom tool for arbitrary angles. The basic Rotate PDF only handles 90° increments since those don't require re-rasterization.

Why does my PDF look correct but print sideways?

The page is rotated visually but the underlying page-box dimensions are the original orientation. Rotate, save, then print — the printed orientation will match the visual.

Does rotating break form fields or signatures?

Form fields and signatures rotate with the page. Drawn signatures look identical post-rotation. Form-field input zones reposition correctly.
